The city of Round Rock will move forward with over $16 million in projects for its water reuse program with assistance from the federal WaterSMART program. The program will cover 25% of project costs, with the city funding the remaining balance after City Council approved the award July 25th.

What is it

Round Rock was the only city in Williamson County that qualified for the federal program, with an award of $4.2 million.

The deadline to use the grant is December 2026 with the possibility to call for an extension, Director of Utilities Michael Thane said.

About the projects

Round Rock’s water reuse program treats effluent coming out of Brushy Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant and prepares it to be used for nonpotable purposes like irrigation.

There are three planned projects to further Round Rock’s water reuse program using the matching grant. The first would construct a second storage tank at the wastewater treatment plant, and the second and third projects would extend a pipeline from the plant close to Dell Technologies.

Quote of note

“The good thing is it’s getting it closer to the interstate, and that’s our goal so we can provide reuse water opportunities throughout our city,” Thane said.

Looking forward

Construction for the projects shouldn’t impact roadways, Thane said. However, the city may need to obtain an easement for part of the project.
