1. Equipment upgrades coming to Round Rock fire

Two new fire trucks are coming to Round Rock after receiving approval from City Council July 11.

What’s happening

At a cost of $1.9 million, the new trucks for the Round Rock Fire Department will replace two old vehicles, which are both about 10 years old.

2. Round Rock to fund low-income programs with federal dollars

The city of Round Rock will use federal grant dollars to assist a local food pantry, provide housing assistance and build park improvements, among other projects.

Round Rock City Council approved a plan July 11 to spend Community Development Block Grant funding for fiscal year 2024-25.

Over $642,000 was allocated to the city to implement programs for affordable housing, for suitable living environments or to boost economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income individuals.

3. Round Rock PD to purchase ballistic imaging system


The Round Rock Police Department will be able to use new imaging software to analyze bullet casings after receiving City Council approval July 11.

Round Rock City Council approved a $218,000 contract with Forensic Technology Inc. to purchase a ballistics imaging software system, which is used to identify bullet casings and match them to weapons. The system will also allow the police department’s crime scene unit to capture and store information to submit to the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, a federal database.

4. Williamson County accepts funds to combat homelessness


Williamson County Commissioners Court voted unanimously during its June 25 meeting to accept funds from a grant program offered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

County documents show the grant, named the Emergency Solutions Grants Program, awarded the county $162,125 in funds for a five-part program aimed at assisting residents experiencing homelessness.

5. Memorial park reopened, Big Boy Hester Family Field unveiled


Round Rock’s Memorial Park reopened July 20, unveiling the recently renamed Big Boy Hester Family Field. Both are a part of the greater Heritage Trail West project, which is expected to wrap up later this year, according to city officials.

The city of Round Rock approved a resolution in April to rename the “Bluffs” baseball field in Memorial Park after Gail “Big Boy” Hester. City Council acknowledged his contributions to the city, including helping bring in the Dell Diamond and the Round Rock Express.
