The Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department will apply for millions in grant funds from the Texas Department of Transportation to offset some of the cost of the Heritage Trail East project.

A project of the 2013 bond, the trail project would see a 10-foot wide trail extended along a portion of Brushy Creek near downtown Round Rock from Mays Street to Georgetown Street and facilitate the design of a new playground and a pedestrian bridge over the creek.

With a total projected cost over $7.25 million, Parks and Recreation Department Director Rick Atkins said during a public meeting May 25 that his department is seeking state funding to help offset the cost of the project, as construction costs and costs of materials have increased significantly.

Atkins said the potential reimbursement amount expected from an 80-20 grant—which would see TXDoT fund the project 80% with a 20% match from the city—is around $5.8 million. If awarded the grant, Atkins said the city's grant match amount would be around $1.45 million. City staff are expected to apply for the grant funds in early June.
