The Pflugerville ISD Board of Trustees approved the appointment of 122 members to a District of Innovation exploratory committee on Thursday, which is the first step in the DOI process.

Trustee Paul King emphasized that this is the initial exploration step, not the final step in accepting a DOI plan.

"This is just to study the possibility," he said.

Board chair Vernagene Mott said the committee will begin meeting in May to gather input from different groups and decide which DOI exemptions of which to take advantage.

"The board will absolutely have the final say," Mott said.

In January, there were more than 60 districts of innovation throughout Texas. The most common exemptions include minutes of instruction, school start times and class sizes.

Pflugerville ISD began to explore the District of Innovation process at a February board meeting but received much public feedback to ask for a delay in the process.
