The first week of October is here, bringing new fiscal years, fall weather and more construction. Here are five things to know this week in Round Rock, Pflugerville and Hutto:

1. Oct. 1 marks the beginning of fiscal year 2017-18 for all Texas cities and counties. The cities of Round Rock, Pflugerville and Hutto all individually passed budgets in the past several months and approved property tax rates as a source of revenue. Read about the approved tax rates for Round Rock, Pflugerville and Hutto here. In Community Impact Newspaper's October edition, which hits homes Oct. 7, a cover story will provide a deep dive into each city's individual budget.

2. Tuesday, Oct. 3, is when Texas cities will celebrate the 32nd annual National Night Out. (The majority of cities around the U.S. celebrate the event in August.) The event focuses on crime and drug prevention in communities throughout the country. The cities of Pflugerville and Round Rock have encouraged residents to hold block parties in neighborhoods to visit with police, city officials and other emergency personnel. Residents of Pflugerville can register their block parties here.

3. Hutto City Council will host a regular meeting Thursday night to discuss possible action on an amphitheater at Pollard Park. The council will consider approving the selection of an architecture and engineering firm to execute the design. Read the agenda here.

4. Hutto ISD named a new candidate for superintendent for the schools to replace interim Superintendent Ed Ramos, who has been serving in that role since Doug Killian left the district to serve as superintendent of Pflugerville ISD. Celina Estrada Thomas has been serving as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction with Fredericksburg ISD since 2015. The state requires a 21-day waiting period before Thomas can officially be offered a contract for employment.

5. Lane closures will continue taking place this week in Round Rock on I-35, RM 620 and on other major roadways. Know these five key lane closures before driving this week in Round Rock.
