As part of a $332 million 2018 bond, Pflugerville ISD officials approved a $3.2 million districtwide upgrade for its wireless network.

The unanimous approval came during a Feb. 17 regular meeting, and district information states about 7%, or $24.3 million, of the 2018 bond was designated for technology.

The board selected a company called Layer 3, which offered to provide hardware and services for the entire project at a cost of $3.16 million. Because Layer 3 was the only respondent through a request for bids, staff compared pricing with another company, CDW-G, and reported in district documents that would have cost roughly $5.8 million for hardware only.

District documents state the 2018 bond will fund the replacement of approximately 2,800 wireless access points and four wireless controllers that are reaching the end of their functionality. The components drive the district’s wireless network, which is critical to the continued support of student and staff devices, the documents state.

Victor Valdez, the district's chief technology officer, said the original wireless network was installed in 2015.

"As we all know, that is an eternity in terms of technology, and it's time to get this done," Valdez said.
