As part of its community risk reduction plan, Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2 finished installing more than 3,000 new smoke alarms throughout homes in Pflugerville.

A Feb. 8 news release from the ESD states the effort was made possible by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Staff from ESD 2 began the project in early 2020, and the release states 3,179 new alarms were placed in about 1,000 single-family homes that either had no alarms or had alarms that were more than 10 years old.

“Our main priority is to ensure that nobody in our community is left vulnerable in the event of a fire,” said Nicholas Perkins, Pflugerville fire chief, Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2, in the release. “Smoke alarms are an important household item most people don’t keep up with until it's too late, generally because they are unaware of the required maintenance or because they do not have the means to replace them when needed."

The release states ESD 2 plans in the near future to expand its risk reduction plan to focus on installing more smoke alarms, reducing home-cooking fire calls and reducing hazardous materials incidents.
