Work to convert Hutto ISD's Ninth Grade Center to the district's second high school will begin this summer, Superintendent Jeni Neatherlin said in a March 12 Hutto Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

What you need to know

In addition to Neatherlin's update on the school's construction timeline, administrators and representatives of VLK Architects also provided an update on designs for the new high school at a March 13 board meeting.

The update came with new renderings showing what the exterior and interior of the campus could look like, including plans for an auditorium, competition gym and field house.

What they're saying

Neatherlin said the conversion would create additional space on the campus for career and technical education programming.

"It'll have all the things that Hutto High School has, and it will be a place where we have more opportunities for more CTE programs so our kids are ready for what's next," Neatherlin said.

The campus conversion and expansion is expected to last two years, according to VLK Architects.

How we got here

In May 2023, voters approved the use of $522 million to expand and improve district facilities as HISD is growing.

The bond included three propositions.
  • Proposition A—the largest of the three at $471.5 million—funds several major campus projects, including construction of two new elementary schools and expansion of the Ninth Grade Center into a full high school.
  • At $10.5 million, Proposition B provides funding for new instructional technology devices, such as classroom computers and audio-video equipment.
  • Proposition C provides $40 million for the renovation of the administrative building at 200 College St. into a districtwide academic center with space for several alternative education programs.
