Hutto ISD renewed its contract with Starbase Academy—a science, technology, engineering and math program provided through the U.S. Department of Defense—Sept. 14.

The gist

HISD renewed its contract with the DOD for a STEM program that allows the district's fifth grade students to spend a total of 25 hours receiving instruction from the National Guard at Camp Mabry in Austin. The educational time is spread out over a total of five days during the school year. This is the ninth year HISD has partnered with the National Guard to participate in the program. The agreement only requires that the district provide transportation to its students.

About the program

The hands-on program allows students to engage directly with a variety of scientific concepts through group and individual activities. The agreement approved by the district states the program is intended to increase student interest in STEM fields. The agreement is available here.
