Hutto ISD trustees selected the name from a group of community submissions at an Aug. 25 meeting.
The school's namesake, Gus Almquist, served on the Hutto ISD board of trustees for 17 years, after which he continued to be closely involved in the Hutto community.
"I just really think that Gus did a lot for our community and was somebody our kids can look up to," Trustee Shannon Jacobs said.
The new middle school is in the design development phase following the board's approval of a schematic design in May.
