Pflugerville ISD officials have renamed Connally High School's annual track and field home meet in memory of a former coach.

The Todd Schonhar Memorial Cougar Relays honors Schonhar, a former assistant football coach and head track coach who died in January from coronavirus-related complications. He was 57 years old.

Prior to working at Connally, Schonhar also was an assistant football coach at Galena Park North Shore High School and helped lead the team to a state championship win in 2003. He also worked at Northern Illinois University, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin State University and Stony Point High School, according to the district.

“Coach Schonhar meant a lot to our athletes and to our coaches, so we wanted to do something to give back to him and his wife so she knew how special he was to all of us,” said Brenda Samuels, PfISD's newly appointed head track coach, in the release.

The Todd Schonhar Memorial Scholarship fund was created in his memory. Contributions to the fund can be made here.
