Hutto City Council amended an ordinance that would modify the eligibility criteria for school zones.

The amendment, approved May 6, takes out the requirement for sidewalks, marked crosswalks and a crossing guard to be present at pedestrian crossings. It also removes an eligibility flowchart, which started with school principals requesting school zones.

Council first discussed amending the school zone criteria at the March 18 meeting to address the possibility of a school zone on Limmer Loop near Cottonwood Creek Elementary. Limmer Loop does not currently have sidewalks or a crosswalk, and the posted speed limit is 50 mph. The Hutto Town Square neighborhood is across the street from the school.

With the amended school zone eligibility, a potential school zone could be placed on Limmer Loop.
