Austin Public Works has begun construction improvements to make East Yager Lane a more walkable thoroughfare on a 1-mile stretch between Natures Bend and Jourdan Crossing Boulevard, according to a release from the city.
The project includes the addition of an 8- to 10-foot shared-use path on the south side of East Yager Lane; crossing improvements including Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps, curb extensions and crossing islands at five intersections; new sidewalk connections between existing sidewalk gaps along the project area; and a new protected bike lane on the north side of East Yager Lane.
“Addressing gaps in our sidewalk network and retrofitting our streets to work for all modes of transportation are both crucial to meet our residents’ needs as Austin continues to grow,” said Assistant City Manager Gina Fiandaca, who oversees the City’s Mobility Outcome, in the release. “Beginning this project brings us one step closer to providing Austinites of all ages and abilities with access to safe and affordable options for getting where they need to go.”
Funds for the $2.8 million project come from the 2016 mobility bond, the 2020 mobility bond and sidewalk fee-in-lieu funding, according to the release. The project is expected to be completed in 12-18 months.
