A free shuttle service between the Kramer MetroRail station in North Austin and Domain Northside ended Tuesday after funding for the eight-month pilot program ran out.

Pecan Street Inc., a research group that looks at how technology and behavior interact, had received a grant through the U.S. Department of Energy to fund the pilot program, and Electric Cab of North America provided the service.

The pilot program began last November and offered free rides to residents between the MetroRail Station and Domain Northside to offer a first- or last-mile connection to their destinations.

"We are proud to have participated in this program, and disappointed to recently be informed that the federal grant funding has run out,” Domain Northside General Manager Aj Coffee said in a statement. “We realize this service has been an amenity for many of the shoppers, residents, office workers and business commuters to and from the Kramer Station. We want to thank Pecan Street, Inc., Electric Cab of North America and Capital Metro for this partnership and making this temporary service possible."

In a statement, Pecan Street officials reported that they are looking into alternative funding sources to continue the program.

“We encourage you to let your employers, landlords and businesses you frequent know how the service has benefited you and enabled you to get around the neighborhood quickly and efficiently,” the company stated.

After seeing the success of the shuttle service at Domain Northside, Electric Cab had also expanded the program in February to downtown Austin.
