The US 183 North toll project in Northwest Austin that will connect to the MoPac toll lanes and to Toll 183A in Cedar Park received a nod of approval Oct. 26 from the Texas Transportation Commission. The commission approved a $500 million agreement Thursday with the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority that allows the toll project to move forward. The US 183 North project would add two toll lanes in each direction on US 183 between MoPac and RM 620. It would also maintain four continuous main lanes to fix the existing imbalance where the highway reduces to three lanes. Flyovers would also be built to connect to the MoPac express toll lanes. Bicycle and pedestrian improvements include two shared-use path segments, new sidewalks and cross-street connections, according to commission documents. Not included in the project are the flyovers connecting to RM 620 near the Anderson Mill neighborhood. Those would be added at a later date when demand warrants the connection, the Mobility Authority previously told Community Impact Newspaper. Those flyovers would cost $150 million. Under the agreement with the Mobility Authority, the Texas Department of Transportation would procure and manage the design-build contract—a process in which construction begins before the design is fully complete in an effort to expedite the project. After construction is finished in 2022, the Mobility Authority would operate the toll lanes, according to commission documents. TXDOT is funding the fourth continuous main lane with $120 million from the State Highway Fund as part of the Texas Clear Lanes initiative to relieve congestion on major highways. The Mobility Authority would fund the remainder of the project with $380 million in toll revenue bonds. The agency revealed its financing plan in June.
