Safety improvements completed July 8 at the intersection of North Lamar Boulevard and Parmer Lane will make the area safer for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, according to the city.

As part of the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan that aims to reduce traffic fatalities to zero by 2025, the Austin Transportation Department identified five intersections that would benefit from improvements to make them safer. The intersections at Lamar and Parmer and at Lamar and Rundberg Lane made the list.

Improvements completed at Lamar and Parmer include reconstructed right-turn islands at the northwest and southeast corners, restriped crosswalks with horizontal lines for better visibility and added sidewalks at the northwest and northeast corners. A new traffic signal also was installed on Lamar north of Parmer near the Walmart.

Last summer, the city added a new pedestrian hybrid beacon on Lamar near John B. Connally High School. The beacon allows a pedestrian to push a button that stops traffic so the pedestrian can safely cross the street.

The city of Austin began the work March 6, and the improvements cost about $647,000. Improvements to the Lamar and Rundberg intersection were completed in March.
