Three Austin ISD elementary schools in North Austin will have new principals when schools open their doors for the 2020-21 school year.

The AISD board of trustees approved six new principal appointments across the school district at its April 27 meeting. Guerrero-Thompson Elementary School, McBee Elementary School and Summitt Elementary School in North Austin all now have new principals following that vote.

Briana Garcia was appointed by the board to lead Guerrero-Thompson Elementary as principal. Garcia has been serving as the campus’ interim principal since June 2019 and previously served as the school’s assistant principal for six years, according to an April 28 AISD news release. The new principal has worked in AISD for more than a decade, the release states.

"I am honored to be trusted to be the principal at Guerrero-Thompson," Garcia said in the AISD news release. "It is a privilege to be able to work with our amazing students and staff to continue this journey to excellence that we began seven years ago. I am excited about the challenges and opportunities this new role will bring, and I know that working together will take us to new heights."

McBee Elementary’s previous interim principal, Yvette Celorio-Reyes, was also promoted to fill the position full-time at the AISD board meeting. She had been serving as the school’s interim principal since the beginning of the 2019-20 school year. Celorio-Reyes has more than two decades of education experience, including four years as McBee Elementary’s assistant principal and time as an assistant principal at Webb Primary School in North Austin.

The AISD board also appointed Ariel Greco to serve as the new principal of Summitt Elementary. Greco served as an assistant principal at Menchaca Elementary School in South Austin for the past five years. The new Summitt Elementary principal has a combined 12 years of education experience, all of which have been with AISD, according to the district.
