As education resources are getting pushed online due to school closures throughout the end of the school year, local nonprofit Austin Voices for Education and Youth is working to put thousands of books in the hands of Austin students.

On April 27, beginning at 3 p.m., AVEY will distribute 1,200 new books to families and students at Navarro Early College High School, located at 1201 Payton Gin Road, Austin.

“Without school and public libraries, many children don’t have engaging books at home to keep their reading going. This is something parents have been asking for from our Title 1 schools,” said Louis Malfaro, former Texas AFT president, in an April 27 news release.

AVEY will distribute the books alongside its weekly meal distribution program. More than 500 families are expected to come to the April 27 meal and book distribution event, AVEY said in its news release.

Families can select age-appropriate books from AVEY’s donation selection, the nonprofit stated. According to the organization’s news release, AVEY will continue to distribute books and free meals as schools remain closed.
