After success with his first Pita Fusion restaurant in Round Rock, which opened in 2009, Nick Calandro said he did not have to look far to find a suitable location for expansion.
Calandro opened the second Pita Fusion in June on US 183 in Northwest Austin. The location was close to his home and in a retail center that had a number of store closings but has recently experienced a revival, he said.
“I go by this area all the time, and I felt I was staring into this empty space,” Calandro said.
Pita Fusion offers pita wraps and sandwiches, and customers may customize with their choice of meats, vegetables and sauces.
Customers may also select items from Pita Fusion’s menu, such as the Port Austin with marinated portobello mushrooms and grilled avocados; the Maui Chicken with grilled chicken, ham and grilled pineapple; or the California Club with smoked turkey, bacon and avocado.
The restaurant makes its own pita bread and also offers catering.
Calandro said the menu is similar to the original location, but some items differ because of Pita Fusion’s loyalty rewards program that offers customers a chance to name menu items.
“It will be interesting to see what becomes popular at which location,” Calandro said.
