Check out the latest construction updates in the North and Northwest Austin area, including projects to improve vehicle and pedestrian mobility, reduce house and street flooding and modernize a damaged dam.

Mobility, water system improvements on Spicewood Springs Road continue

Work is continuing on the Spicewood Springs Regional Mobility Project between Mesa Road and Loop 360 in North Austin to improve road conditions, vehicle and pedestrian mobility, and upgrade water systems.

Projects include widening the two-lane road into a four-lane road with left-turn bays, as well as creating two water detention ponds and pedestrian and bicycle shared-use paths, and improving the storm drain system, water transmission and wastewater lines.

Crews will now work to:
  • Begin paving the north side of Spicewood Springs Road, starting at Loop 360 and moving west
  • Install a 48-inch water transmission line
  • Continue construction on retaining walls
Construction is expected to be completed in 2026.

Phase 3 of Little Walnut Creek flood mitigation projects begins

The $19.7 million project aims to reduce flooding from Little Walnut Creek for houses and roads located between Metric Boulevard and Rutland Drive.

According to Capital Delivery Services officials, Phase 3 includes the following ongoing construction between Mountain Quail Road and Quail Valley Boulevard and along Mearns Meadow Boulevard:
  • Installation of box culverts, which are pipes that run under the road to collect floodwater, and creating new inlets to allow water to enter the culverts
  • Installation of wastewater lines and connecting services
  • Restoration and landscaping of stormwater regulating structures
Phase 3 is expected to be completed by mid-2025. The final phase of the project, Phase 4, is expected to begin in mid-2025 and be completed by early 2026, and will include similar work between Quail Valley Drive and Boyer Boulevard.

Excavation begins for Old Lampasas Dam Modernization project

The $14.9 million project began in October and aims to modernize the dam to reduce the risk of flooding, prevent dam erosion, improve Bull Creek water quality and maintain Jollyville Plateau salamander habitats, as previously reported by Community Impact. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

Capital Delivery Services officials said the modernized dam will meet city and state safety regulations and significantly reduce the risk of failure by:
  • Replacing the damaged outlet pipe
  • Improving the spillway
  • Modifying the shape and elevation of the embankment
  • Installing new flood early warning systems
  • Relocating a wastewater line
Ongoing work now includes excavating the dam area by removing rock and soil to create a new foundation.

City of Austin construction hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturdays. Noise, dust and vibrations are expected with all three projects, as well as some road closures.
