Residents in the Oak Knoll neighborhood in Northwest Austin can expect a delay in the Oak Knoll Flood Risk Reduction project, per an announcement from the capital delivery services department Dec. 26.

Construction on the project, which will upgrade the neighborhood's storm drainage system to prevent local flooding in the area, is set to begin this spring and take at least two years to complete.

About the project

Per city documents, the project area—located between Woodcrest Drive and Jollyville Road, and Broad Oaks Drive and Columbia Oaks Drive—currently has a limited drainage system, which can lead to local flooding.

The project will:
  • Upgrade the storm drain system by installing new storm drain pipes and inlets to carry stormwater to Walnut Creek
  • Increase the capacity of the Chelsea Moor detention pond by deepening it and connecting it to the storm drain system
  • Relocate water and wastewater lines

Funds for the $9 million project will come from the city's $925 million 2018 bond, which allocates $184 million for flood mitigation, open space and water quality protection through Proposition D.

City officials said construction is expected to begin in spring 2025 and be completed by late 2027.

The project was originally expected to begin in April 2024 and be completed by 2026, but officials said coordination efforts with gas and telecommunication companies to relocate two utility lines have led to delays.

What residents should know

Construction on this type of project is substantial, officials said in an email to Community Impact, and will cause disruption to the neighborhood. Residents should expect:
  • Extended road closures
  • Noise, dust and vibrations
  • Work in easements and at the edges of some yards in the right of way to install inlets
Officials said work hours will be 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday with the possibility of some work on the weekends at the contractor's discretion to keep the project on schedule.
