The inaugural class of The University of Texas Dell Medical School began studies July 5. School officials hope a new teaching hospital, Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, will anchor a health service and research district in downtown Austin.

Dell Seton Medical Center is about 80 percent complete and on track to open May 21. It will take the place of University Medical Center Brackenridge, which will close for Central Health to redevelop the property with a private developer that has yet to be chosen.

What’s next

The $310 million hospital will be equipped with several technological innovations, including a mobile navigation system for patients and visitors as well as special cameras inside operating room lighting arrays that will be able to broadcast medical procedures to students at Dell Medical School. The hospital will have 211 beds, including 42 emergency beds, and 13 operating rooms.
