Austin-based organization,
Girls Empowerment Network, will host its 10th annual We Are Girls Austin conference this weekend at Anderson High School, 8403 Mesa Drive, Austin. Girls and teachers interested in bringing groups of students had the opportunity to apply for scholarship money to cover the $30 per person ticket expense. The network is still seeking donations to cover the ticket cost for over 350 girls, a representative said.
Each year, more than 1,000 attendees participate in the conference on scholarship. An estimated 2,000 girls, family members and supporters are expected to attend this year's event, according to a representative from the organization.
The event features workshops, activities and panels led by influential women. Panel guests include Denise Hamilton, founder of Watch Her Work, an initiative that aims to close the achievement gap between men and women in the U.S., and Lizzie Velasquez, author and anti-bullying activist.
The event will take place at Anderson High School on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
