Next month, the city of Austin will construct new sidewalks and upgrade existing ones along Jollyville Road in Northwest Austin.
The two-month project, which will target Jollyville between Duval and Balcones Woods roads, will be complete in December. The city plans to add new sidewalks and retrofit existing sidewalks and ramps to bring them into compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. The project will cost about $330,000 and is being funded in part by Capital Metro as well as city of Austin bonds approved in 2000 and 2012.
The
city of Austin is missing 2,387 miles, or $1.46 billion worth, of sidewalks, said John Eastman, a project manager in the Sidewalk and Special Projects Division of the Public Works Department. He said the city is only able to build between 10 and 15 miles of sidewalks each year.
In June, Austin City Council approved an updated sidewalk master plan. About
$37 million from the city’s 2016 mobility bond would fund new sidewalks if approved by voters Nov. 8.
