ORIGINAL POST, Feb. 18 at 2:52 p.m.: As Central Texas deals with a historic winter storm, breweries in and around Austin are opening their facilities to help local residents with utility outages.
The Texas Craft Brewers Guild, a nonprofit trade association, has compiled a collection of breweries across the state that are open Feb. 18 to distribute potable drinking water and serve as warming shelters while thousands of Texans remain without power or running water.
“While many craft breweries across the state are not yet safely able to reopen until road conditions improve, utilities are restored and facility repairs can be assessed, an increasing number of brewers are opening to provide potable water and a warm place to rest and recharge for their neighbors and community members,” said Caroline Wallace, deputy director of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, in an email to Community Impact Newspaper.
In Austin, breweries have opened up in different neighborhoods to provide services to residents in need. Because of their operations, breweries have the ability to boil and sanitize large volumes of water. The city of Austin is currently under a citywide boil water notice after Austin Water said it lost power at the city's largest water treatment plant.
Hopsquad Brewing Co. in North Austin posted on its social media pages that it would open at 3 p.m. Feb. 18 to fill containers with drinking water. The brewery, located at the corner of Braker Lane and Kramer Lane, is also inviting people to charge their devices inside the brewery.
The Brewtorium in North Central Austin, located off Airport Boulevard, is open through 6 p.m. Feb. 18 as a warming shelter to residents who have lost energy. Residents may also come with their own containers to fill with safe drinking water.
Less than a mile down the road from The Brewtorium, Black Star Co-Op off North Lamar Boulevard is also open Feb. 18 and distributing water to residents. According to a post on Black Star’s social media pages, the brewpub is also serving food.
In South Austin, Meanwhile Brewing Co.—one of the city’s newest beer makers—remains open through 5 p.m. Feb. 18 to fill containers with potable water.
The Texas Craft Brewers Guild is updating its Instagram page with breweries offering services in Austin and other cities across Texas. You can find its feed of participating breweries here.
