Named after a former professor at Huston-Tillotson University, Dr. General Marshall Middle School was celebrated by the district Oct. 4 during its grand opening.

The gist

Marshall Middle School is located in the Mueller neighborhood at 4401 Tilley St., Austin, and began its first academic year in 2023-24 with a class of sixth graders enrolled from eight elementary schools in the district. Seventh and eighth grade students have not yet joined the campus.

On Oct. 4, the middle school commemorated its opening with an assembly in the gym with speakers that included the school’s principal, Jordan Benson; interim Superintendent Matias Segura; board members Candance Owens and Kevin Foster; and General Marshall’s widow, Marian Lavon Marshall.

Marshall’s family was in attendance as well as members of Marshall’s fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, and the current students and staff of the school.

The decision to name the school after Marshall was made by the board in June 2022.

“Dr. General Marshall is synonymous with not just black excellence, not just intellectual excellence, but a special sacred type of excellence, which is teaching excellence,” Foster said Oct. 4.

Looking back

The middle school was one two of new schools built as part of the 2017 bond program. The bond totaled $1.05 billion, and modernized 16 campuses in the district, Segura said.

“This school has been many years in the making, long before it had students, a name or even a mascot,” Segura said Oct. 4. “It was a vision for a community school that would serve northeast Austin.”
