Originally from Tamil Nadu, a state in South India, Sangam Chettinad Indian Cuisine owner Nalluraj Devaraj moved to Austin in 2000 where he met his current working partners, Rathan Rajendren, Prem Kumar Shreshta and Ram Kulanthaivelu. The four discovered they all had a common goal: to bring the taste of South Indian cuisine to the community. Together, they opened Sangam Chettinad in mid-2018.

What’s in a name?

The name Sangam Chettinad is deeply rooted in South Indian culture, with “Sangam” translating to “bringing people together,” and “Chettinad” referring to the type of South Indian cuisine offered.

“We wanted the name to symbolize the gathering of people and their love of the food,” Rajendren said.

What’s special about it?

Like many other restaurants, the team at Sangam Chettinad came up with some creative ways to stay afloat through the pandemic, including bringing in a robot named Minnal, which means “lightning.” Minnal allows for touch-free dine-in service. He also helps the human servers by delivering food from the kitchen to the table, which Rajendren said was handy during the post-COVID staffing shortage. This, paired with Devaraj’s authentic South Indian recipes, proved to be a hit with both the customers and the staff, Rajendren said.

Why we love it

Chettinad cuisine is known for the complexity of flavors offered, which include freshly ground spices, such as star anise, red chilies, fenugreek, clove and turmeric to name a few, Rejendren said.

Some of the top sellers include any of the 15 available dosas—an Indian-style crepe served with four different chutneys. Another favorite, Rejendren said, is the Chettinad Curry, with protein options, such as chicken, goat, lamb or shrimp, served with a side of steamed white rice.

With over 200 available dishes offering vegetarian, pescatarian and carnivorous options, everyone is bound to find something they will love, Rejendren said.
