The National Weather Service Thursday morning
issued a heat advisory as temperatures in the area are expected to climb to 104 degrees.
The heat advisory is in effect from 2 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday for Travis and Williamson counties.
The National Weather Service's release recommends that people and pets stay indoors for as much time as possible during the advisory period and suggests people in the area wear light and loose clothing, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks, preferably in air conditioned areas.
According to the release, the high temperatures increase the risk for heat related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The heat advisory could be the first of many in coming days, as the
weather forecast predicts possible record high temperatures throughout the weekend.
If temperatures reach the 100-degree mark Thursday afternoon, it will be the 17th day that Austin has recorded triple-digit temperatures this year.
