The Austin ISD board of trustees approved the calendar for 2016-17 by a 5-3-1 vote during its meeting Dec. 14, with Trustees Paul Saldaña, Ann Teich and Yasmin Wagner voting against the proposed calendar. Trustee Edmund Gordon abstained from voting.
The 2016-17 calendar contains several changes from previous years, including providing students and faculty with a full week off for the Thanksgiving holiday Nov. 21-25. During the 2015-16 school year, students and staff were on break from Nov. 25-27.
In exchange for the longer Thanksgiving break, staff will have nine winter break days instead of 10—Dec. 21, 2016-Jan. 2, 2017. AISD students’ winter break will remain at 10 days—Dec. 21, 2016-Jan. 3, 2017.
Other changes include:
- Aug. 22 – first day of classes for students
- Jan. 3, 2017, April 14, 2017 and May 26, 2017 – districtwide staff development days
- June 1, 2017 – last day of classes for students
- June 2, 2017 – last teacher workday
Two bad weather makeup days are scheduled for Feb. 20, 2017, which is Presidents Day, and May 26, 2017. The AISD Calendar Task Force originally recommended April 14, 2017, or Good Friday, as a bad weather makeup day but this choice was not approved by the board.
