After the city of Austin rail bond failed in 2014, video game developer Richard Garriott used his own money to study personal rapid transit, or PRT.
PRT is a transit system using enclosed pods similar to gondolas at ski resorts and is also used at Heathrow Airport in London. The pods would carry people on a raised guideway that would not interfere with traffic, said Garriott, who founded USA PRT.
“With PRT you can build an entire group of cloverleaf roundabouts to service an entire community for about one-tenth the price [of light rail],” he said.
Garriott proposed the idea of PRT on Oct. 29 during the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce’s Innovative Mobility Solutions lunch. Freescale Semiconductor President and CEO Greg Lowe said other innovative solutions in the pipeline include autonomous or assisted-driving vehicles.
“We will have cars, I think, in the next 10 years that are nearly impossible to get into an accident,” he said.
Lowe said the community has a need for transportation and mobility improvements to address inefficiencies and safety in the system.
