Champions residents to vote on $35M in bonds Nov. 3Updated 10:15 p.m. Champions area residents voted no on park bonds and yes on infrastructure bonds placed on the Nov. 3 ballot by Harris County Fresh Water Supply District No. 52. Infrastructure bonds worth $25 million received 659 yes votes with 66 percent. The infrastructure bonds will require a property tax rate of 6.4 cents per $100 of appraised value in 2017. "It passed substantially," said Bob Pryor, president of HCFWSD No. 52. "When it’s 66 percent for and 34 percent against that's a resounding vote. That's a good sign." The infrastructure bond features about $8 million to repair or rebuild water pipeline within the district over the next 20 years. About $1 million could go toward repair or replacement of the district’s wastewater treatment plant. The plant, which prepares water for reuse in Cypress Creek and local golf courses, has exceeded its projected 50 year lifespan, district officials said. The bond would also provide more than $2 million for improvements to the district’s sewer and drainage systems. The $10 million park bond received 568 no votes with 57 percent of the vote. The park bonds would have required a tax of 7.2 cents per $100 of valuation. The proposed park bond included funding to create a dog park, extend and beautify the walking trail on Champions Drive and build a walking trail on Paradise Valley Drive in the current ditch. "We’ll readdress the [park bond] in the future," Pryor said. "Perhaps some of items [should be re-evaluated] after a lot of discussion. A dog park was listed [on the bond]. For various reasons, some in the community are not in favor of dog park. The water board and [home owners association] learned some things about what the community could be interested in." All results are unofficial until canvassed.
