IKEA plans to open a second North Texas location in Grand Prairie.

The home furnishings retailer announced Oct. 13 it would be submitting plans for a new store to the city of Grand Prairie to open in the fall of 2017.

The proposed 293,000-square-foot store will be built on the eastern side of SH 161 and Mayfield Road, north of I-20.

IKEA opened its 310,000-square-foot Frisco location—the first in the Dallas-Fort Worth area—in August 2005. The store has 300 employees.

A 560,000-square-foot Nebraska Furniture Mart opened earlier this year a few miles from Frisco's IKEA in The Colony. But IKEA spokesperson Joseph Roth said the Frisco store has more than enough business to justify a second location.

“The Dallas-Fort Worth area is fast growing, and we want to be part of that growth,” IKEA spokesperson Joseph Roth said. “The Frisco store continues to perform really well and we believe opening a second location will relieve and complement the Frisco location."

IKEA U.S. President Lars Petersson said in a press release that IKEA's first DFW location was well-received more than 10 years ago.

“This proposed store would complement our Metroplex presence established in Frisco and bring the unique family-friendly shopping experience closer to customers in other parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth area," Petersson said.
