The city of Round Rock is gearing up for some major changes to Old Settlers Park. Round Rock City Council approved a $584,589 contract with Halff Associates Inc. on Sept. 10 to design the Old Settlers Palm Valley Adult Sports Complex Project. The complex will include facilities for sand volleyball, bocce ball, horseshoes, soccer and 3-4 adult softball fields. The adult softball fields are being moved to Old Settlers Park after the sale of McNeil Park, which will be the new location of music venue Nutty Brown Cafe and Amphitheatre. Voters approved the sale of McNeil Park in a election in March 2006. "This has been on the books for a long time," Mayor Alan McGraw said. Council also approved an amended contract Sept. 10 with Schrickel, Rollins and Associates Inc. for engineering services for the Old Settlers Park multipurpose fields. The multipurpose fields will allow for a variety of youth league sports to be played at the same time. The city amended the contract amount, from $1,223,000 to $1,719,000, to include a clubhouse and meeting area to the fields. Adding the clubhouse will also change the project's construction budget by $3 million, from $25 million to $28 million. "We’ve added a clubhouse structure that will make this among the premier complexes in the area," said Rick Atkins, Round Rock Parks and Recreation director. Construction of the multipurpose fields is expected to begin in January 2016 and last until spring 2017 for Phase I of the fields, with Phase II being completed in spring 2018.
