Highland Mall may be closed, but an Aug. 27-29 surplus sale will allow some Austin-area residents to forever keep a piece of the former shopping center. Austin Community College now occupies Highland Mall, having taken over the JCPenney building on the north side of the property last fall. ACC next intends to complete a $152.8 million redevelopment of the mall's main area following bond approval from district voters in November. The school closed the mostly defunct shopping center to consumers April 30, and construction begins in 2016, according to ACC. "The college is committed to being good stewards of taxpayer dollars, but [ACC] can't use everything that was left behind," said Neil Vickers, ACC vice president of finance and budget, in a statement. "Instead of throwing those items away, we're selling them to anyone who may need them." Items for sale include various remnants of the former Highland Mall, ranging from store fixtures, window displays, tables, desks, chairs and even restaurant equipment. ACC will also sell children's strollers and gaming machines left behind at the mall. All items are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, according to ACC. The surplus sale will take place at the former men's Dillard's store at the former Highland Mall, 6001 Airport Blvd. Memorabilia will be sold from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 27-28 and 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 29.
