The method for determining the drainage fee rate for residents and businesses will change based on Austin City Council action taken June 25.

The monthly drainage fee for single-family and multifamily residents is currently a flat rate of $9.80—with the exception of those who live in high rises six stories or taller.

Beginning Oct. 1 the city’s Watershed Protection Department will use a new fee calculation that will appear on residents’ bills in November.

The new drainage fee assessment will consider the percentage of impervious cover on a given property. If a property’s pavement or building footprint is a higher percentage of the property than green space, the drainage fee will be higher for that property.
