The Woodlands Township has purchased land in Town Center for possible use as a government facility.
The township bought 11.6 acres of land along Lake Woodlands Drive near The Woodlands United Methodist Church. The township board of directors approved the purchase at its June 18 meeting. The sum paid for the land parcel is undisclosed.
Township Chairman Bruce Tough said no determination has been made as to the use of the land, but the township is considering its options.
“This is probably the only land available in The Woodlands that can be used for a suitable government complex,” Tough said.
Among the potential uses for the parcel could be a police station, municipal court building, city hall or cultural arts center, he said.
The township’s Economic Development Committee is exploring the possibility of developing a cultural facility in The Woodlands.
The township is facing the possibility of incorporating, which will require a vote sometime in the next 45 years. An agreement between the township and cities of Conroe and Houston, which prohibits either of the cities from annexing The Woodlands, requires the township to vote on its future form of governance.
Tough said he believes The Woodlands will incorporate, and the township is planning for that time.
“One of these days we will be a city,” he said. “That’s inevitable.”
