A Dripping Springs-based brain injury treatment facility opened a day program and outpatient treatment facility in North Austin on March 23.

Day Program Director Austin Sheffield said the difference between CORE Health Care and other similar facilities is its nonclinical atmosphere. This is important because many CORE patients spend five to six hours a day receiving treatment three to five days a week, he said.

“They want a return to normalcy,” he said. “It makes them feel like they don’t have to go to therapy all the time.”

CORE treats patients age 17 and older who experienced a brain injury from an accident or acquired an injury from an incident such as a stroke, Sheffield said. The center has therapy rooms to provide patients with occupational, physical, speech and group therapy. He said the center even has a kitchen to help patients relearn daily tasks such as cooking.

“[The goal is] getting people close to where they were before an accident,” Sheffield said.
