Harris County Precinct 4’s Senior Adult Program gives seniors opportunities to get involved and participate in local events.

“The activities offered through the Senior Adult Program provide volunteer opportunities, informational and referral seminars and programs, advocacy and continued learning for all who participate,” said Jan Sexton, director of community centers and the Senior Adult Program.

Precinct 4 partners with more than 400 senior adult groups to provide seniors age 50 and older with ongoing activities, such as festivals, museums, plays, concerts, sporting events and day trips within a 150-mile radius of Houston.

“[Precinct 4] Commissioner [Jack] Cagle recognizes the contributions the 50-and-older population continues to provide in the communities in which they live and is committed to offering these opportunities that promote healthy living, continued education and socialization,” Sexton said.

The program receives additional funding through its nonprofit organization, Fun4Seniors, which furthers the organization’s mission of enhancing the lives of senior adults.

“We’ve always worked to provide quality programs for our senior adults,” Cagle said. “Our SAP staff constantly works to build relationships with our constituents to find out what interests them. In fact many of our community center programs come directly from the requests of our senior adults.”

Upcoming Fun4Seniors events include trips to Houston Astros games, the downtown aquarium, historic Galveston, Houston resale shops, as well as Bridge tournaments.

According to Harris County’s 2015 demographic study, Precinct 4 has the highest population of unincorporated residents in the county at an estimated 815,000 people. This growth in the area translates to the need to provide residents of all ages with suitable programs. In the coming years Cagle said the goal is to make more seniors aware of the precinct’s program.

“We offer everything from art to exercise classes at our community centers,” Cagle said.
