With one of the wettest springs on record in North Texas, mosquitoes are taking advantage of the standing water.

After beginning mosquito pool testing May 1, the city of Frisco received notification May 21 that a pool in Frisco Lakes tested positive for West Nile Virus, although no human cases of the virus have been reported, according to the city’s communications office. An area of the golf course at Frisco Lakes was treated, along with a nearby wooded area that leads to Lake Lewisville. “Without water features, the ponds don’t circulate and have greater potential for attracting mosquitoes,” Environmental Health Supervisor Julie Stallcup said in a city news release. “We anticipated the mosquito season would be even more challenging this year give all the recent rains.” The Texas Department of State Health Services urges resident to practice the “Four D’s”: • Drain all standing water • Dress in light-colored clothing and wear long sleeves when outdoors • Deet—use mosquito repellents that contain Deet • Dusk or dawn—avoid activity during the hours when mosquitoes are most active.
