Private manicured yards, widescreen televisions and webcams are typically luxuries for humans, but every guest at Elite Suites Pet Resort gets all three.

Elite Suites, a luxury pet groomery, hotel and day care, was opened in 2005 by Dave and Jenny Shackelford. It features wrought-iron suites with matching beds, a television in each room and webcams so owners can check in on their pets while they are away.

Special concrete and waste disposal systems keep unpleasant odors to a minimum.

The city wanted the couple to set up just an indoor exercise area, but Dave said no.

Dave said that dogs need fresh air, so there are also private outdoor yards, including one with artificial turf that can be used on rainy days.

Segments of St. Augustine grass are used for a period, then closed off to recuperate. One portion is covered in artificial turf for use when it rains so muddy paws are not a problem.
