School board members and Frisco ISD parents got their first look Oct. 13 at the first proposed draft attendance zones for the 2015–16 school year with Reedy High School, two middle schools and an elementary school set to open next fall.

A board of trustees workshop centered around rezoning, which will be open to the public, has been set for Oct. 28. However, public input will only be taken at the Nov. 12 regular meeting. The board will make the final rezoning decisions at its December meeting.

The zones can be viewed under the "Rezoning" link on the FISD website at www.friscoisd.org.

"As we talk about rezoning, we all tend to get lost in maps and numbers," Superintendent Jeremy Lyon told trustees, staff and parents. "It's all about maps and numbers and you will see many compelling presentations with great data and many multicolored maps, but we have to understand that to a parent the most important consideration is the effect of the proposal on the educational outcome for their child—and we understand that. And as we talk numbers and present maps, we clearly do understand that what we are really discussing is children and parents and families."

Much of the discussion at the school board meeting centered around zoning changes to accommodate Reedy High School, affecting students from Wakeland High School and Frisco High School and prompting an adjustment to Lone Star High School.

Marina Vista and Eldorado Estates subdivisions (currently in Wakeland's zone)—Ninth- and 10th-grade students, as well as any future high school students, would go to Lone Star High School under the draft zones. Eleventh- and 12th-grade students would be grandfathered to Wakeland.

The Trails and Meadow Creek subdivisions (currently in Wakeland's zone)—Students in grades 9 and 10 for the 2015–16 school year only would attend Reedy and remain there throughout their high school careers. Grades 11 and 12 would be grandfathered to Wakeland, and all future students in the two subdivisions would also go to Wakeland.

Reedy High School zones—Grades 9 and 10 and all future students would go to Reedy. Grades 11 and 12 are grandfathered and would attend Frisco High School.

Draft zones were also proposed to include Trent Middle School (affecting Stafford Middle School), Pearson Middle School (affecting Hunt Middle School and Pioneer Heritage Middle School) and Norris Elementary School (affecting Ashley Elementary School and Mooneyham Elementary School).

Adjustments to the Boals and Robertson elementary school zones were also proposed. Students in the Sunset Pointe neighborhood, currently in Robertson's zone, are proposed to move to Boals.

There will be no provision for FISD residents to speak at the Oct. 28 workshop. However, comments and questions can be directed by phone or email to FISD staff members.

For Reedy High School and Pearson Middle School, contact Rick Cohagan at 469-633-6356 or [email protected]. For Trent Middle School, Norris Elementary School, and adjustments to Lone Star High School/Wakeland High School and Robertson Elementary School/Boals Elementary School, contact Dennis Brent at 469-633-6359 or [email protected].

FISD residents will have the opportunity to give their feedback in person to the board at the Nov. 11 regular meeting.

"Every question or response presented [to FISD staff] will be shared with the demographic team and with the board," said Richard Wilkinson, deputy superintendent of Business Services. "So even if it's before the preliminary workshop, the board sees all the information."

Trustees stressed that all input from parents is taken into consideration before making a decision.
