Colleyville has logged its fifth positive test for West Nile Virus in mosquito pools so far this summer, with four of the positive tests coming from the same location near Windview Estates in southeastern Colleyville.
In response, city officials have escalated treatment at that site with granular larvacide in the creek area where mosquitoes affected by the virus are hatching. A news release from the city reports staff will monitor the area daily and continue to treat as needed, and are in contact with the neighborhood homeowners association. Additionally, new tests will be filed by the end of this week to track progress in the area. City protocols call for spraying to begin only after a human case of West Nile Virus has been reported in the area.
Bedford leads Tarrant County in positive mosquito pool tests this summer with eight. So far, nine cases of West Nile Virus have popped up in Texas, and the overwhelming majority of positive mosquito pools have been centralized in Harris County—363 of 462 such positive pools as of July 30.
Specific safety measures Colleyville recommends to prevent exposure include:
Stay indoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
Dress in long sleeves and pants when outside.
Use insect repellents that contain DEET.
Drain standing water from tires, flowerpots, rain gutters and other areas it collects to keep mosquitoes from breeding.
