Caulen Lauria was not expecting the rush of customers that flooded into his health and athletics spa July 27 on the first day that he opened for business.
"At one point, it felt like we were slammed," he said.
Cryo Body Works, located at 3501 Hyridge Drive in the Westover Square Shopping Center, offers 1.5- to 3-minute cryotherapy treatments, which can help people recover more quickly from injuries and improve energy and sleep, Lauria said.
The walk-in chamber uses cold vapor to release endorphins, collagen and anti-inflammatory proteins in the skin by exposing a person to temperatures of -240 degrees Fahrenheit, Lauria said. He said cryotherapy can be beneficial to anyone and not just athletes. Customers typically burn 600–800 calories about six hours after a treatment, he said. Other benefits include pain relief, reduction of inflammation and healthier and firmer skin.
A grand opening special of $35 is offered for a customer's first cryotherapy session. A regular single session costs $55, and packages start at $260.
Lauria is hosting a grand opening event Aug. 1 with a raffle drawing at 8 p.m. to win two five-session packages.
