Northwest Austin resident Matt Stillwell, who ran against state Rep. Tony Dale in 2012 for the District 136 seat, is now running for the District 6 spot on Austin City Council.

Stillwell moved to Austin in 1990 when he was in high school and has lived eight years in District 6, which encompasses the Williamson County portion of the city and the area surrounding RM 620. He said having the campaign experience in 2012 taught him how to run a campaign and be a candidate.

"I've already met a lot of my neighbors already talked to a lot of people who are my voters," he said. "That campaign definitely put me in a good position for the City Council race."

Stillwell joins candidates Jay Wiley and Jimmy Flannigan in the race. Election day is Nov. 4.

Voters will elect a new council and mayor under the 10-1 plan, which allows residents to elect representatives based on districts rather than through citywide, or at-large, elections. He will officially kickoff his campaign at a May 8 event.

Issues affecting District 6 that Stillwell would like to tackle include wildfire prevention and transportation. He said expanding existing roads and building new infrastructure will be a priority that involves coordination across local agencies, such as the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

"I could form alliances to help with transportation issues on 620 and 2222 for some of these road issues we have in District 6," he said.

Stillwell said working with council members in other districts to solve problems will be key.

"The new council will have to find a way to work together," he said. "I'm trying to meet as many of the other candidates as I can so it's not 10 strangers coming together."
