Georgetown and East View's high school teams will face larger schools closer to home during the next two years.
The Texas University Interscholastic League released its list of realigned football and basketball districts and regions on Feb. 3.
Both of Georgetown's high schools are ranked as 5A and will be in District 25 for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years with Vandegrift, Cedar Park, Vista Ridge, Leander, Dripping Springs and Marble Falls high schools
We moved into a district with schools that have more students than we have, Phil Blue, Georgetown Independent School District athletic director, said. There are four schools larger than Georgetown High [School] in this district. Six of the schools are larger than East View High School.
In the most recent realignment GISD schools have been placed in Region 4, which stretches into the San Antonio area. In previous years, Georgetown was in Region 3, which encompassed parts of Houston.
Its going to be much easier for traveling, Blue said. Football is very difficult because you have to have stadiums large enough to accommodate the crowds. From Georgetown to halfway to Houston, there are only two or three [stadium] choices. It made scheduling very difficult Region 4 is much better. There are a lot of stadiums in Leander, Round Rock, San Marcos and San Antonio.
Blue said he doesnt expect the realignment to hurt Georgetown high school football and basketball team performances.
Were in a really sound place and our motto has kind of been anybody, anytime, anywhere, he said. Our programs are very strong. Its nice to play some different people. Both high schools are going to be very successful.
The Texas UIL office realigns districts and regions every two years to adjust for enrollment changes and new schools, Blue said.
According to a letter from the UIL office, district alignments for other athletic programs will be released by April 15.
