What began as a meager Christmas party for members of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce nearly 30 years ago has evolved into one of the most anticipated community events in The Woodlands.

The annual Taste of the Town, scheduled this year for Jan. 30, features dozens of restaurants, caterers, grocers and bakeries offering samples of their fare to the thousands who visit The Woodlands Marriott Hotel and Convention Center each year.

"In 1985, the economy was weak and the chamber was looking for new ideas to help chamber members, but also the community," chamber President Karen Hoylman said. "The event stemmed from the idea of the chamber hosting a Christmas party for its members, and for about $10, a person or business could invite their staff to this party."

Hoylman said local restaurants were also invited to bring food that would, in turn, entice potential customers.

"It was a win-win for all — the chamber members having a way to have a low-cost Christmas party and a win for the restaurants to promote their business," Hoylman said.

That first Taste of the Town featured about 50 booths and 1,000 attendees. This year, the chamber is expecting more than 120 booths and more than 6,000 in attendance.

"Taste of the Town is a great event for our community," Holyman said. "It shows our support for our area restaurants and food service companies. It is a great time to try out that new restaurant you may not have visited yet or to enjoy your favorite foods."

Ashley Byers, director of special events for the chamber, said proceeds from Taste of the Town help fund the chamber's efforts for community education programs, such as education, health care and economic development events.

This year's event will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Waterway Marriott, 1601 Lake Robbins Drive. In addition to the wide array of beverages and culinary delights, Taste of the Town will offer an auction with a variety of items and a Go Texan section, highlighting Texas grown products. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children.
