Nighttime lane closures have resumed as the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority nears starting construction on MoPac.
Steve Pustelnyk, director of community relations for the MoPac Improvement Project, said crews will finish installing construction signs the night of Dec. 4. Depending on the inclement weather predicted to start Dec. 5, he said crews likely will not begin restriping the highway to create 11-foot lanes until the week of Dec. 8.
"Weather will be a factor in when we can get work done," he said.
Lane closures are restricted to 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The effect of restriping the highway lanes will be minimal to commuters, Pustelnyk said.
"It's not a dramatic shift," he said.
The MoPac Improvement Project involves adding one toll lane in each direction on MoPac from Parmer Lane to Lady Bird Lake. The cost of the toll will depend on traffic volume, and the project is slated to wrap up in late 2015.
Pustelnyk said the restriping work will occur between US 183 and Enfield Road, adding that construction near Enfield would not begin until early 2014. It will take crews about three to four weeks to finish restriping, setting up the concrete barriers and installing erosion control fences.
The Mobility Authority mailed out about 75,000 flyers with magnets that direct residents where to find more information about the projects. Information is found at www.mopacexpress.com and on the mobile app for iPhone and Android platforms. The Mobility Authority also sends out tweets with the latest alerts at @improvemopac.
Drivers may also tune in to the highway advisory radio station on 800AM, and residents can call the 24-hour hotline at 512-270-5000 to ask questions. Pustelnyk said phone calls to the hotline picked around Thanksgiving.
"People want to know how it will affect their drive and when work will starts in their area," he said.
