Repairs to Williamson County's parking garage located between Third, Fourth and Rock streets in Georgetown will wait a while longer. The parking garage has been in need of repairs since 2011.
Williamson County commissioners are expected to discuss and possibly approve a bid to repair the garage at their Oct. 15 meeting, after pulling a similar agenda item on Oct. 1.
"There was a bid item for the court to award a construction contract for the repairs of the parking garage [on Oct. 1]," said Robert Daigh, senior director of infrastructure for Williamson County. "The item was pulled for consideration until the court could get some additional information."
The parking garage has been closed since 2011, when cracks were discovered in the structure. Jose I. Guerra Inc. evaluated the damage, and determined the county will need to make repairs and reinforce different aspects of the facility.
Williamson County Public Affairs Manager Connie Watson said the amount of time required to locate the cause of the cracking and engineer a repair plan is part of the reason it has taken so long to start repairs on the garage.
Daigh compared the process of finding the "multiple deficiencies" that led to cracks in the structure to that of a doctor locating the cause of symptoms before prescribing treatment.
"This was an extraordinarily complex series of issues that we needed to first analyze and then come up with the failure mechanisms, so that we could then design [a] repair [plan] to address the mechanisms of failure," he said.
Pending commissioners decisions, Daigh said repairs could possibly be completed within six months of awarding the bid.
Daigh also said he does not anticipate the cost of repairs to exceed $750,000, which would come from the county's general fund.
