Many businesses and professional offices in west downtown, including the area surrounding the Georgetown Public Library, are located in old houses. The city also owns several buildings in the area that are expected to be vacated in 2014 as city offices are moved to new buildings throughout the city.

The city is still studying options for ways to use the department's current building, and Assistant City Manager Laurie Brewer said she hopes to bring a proposal to City Council in 2014 as it considers its 2014–15 budget. The building could be repurposed for other city offices, such as the planning department and municipal court, she said.

Future land use

11. City officials are considering partnering with Williamson County to pave an overflow parking lot at the corner of Martin Luther King and Eighth streets to serve the Georgetown Public Library, Brewer said. Existing unused buildings on the property would be taken down to build the lot.

City officials are considering building a parking garage at an existing lot at Ninth and Main streets or at Austin Avenue and Fifth Street to provide more parking for downtown businesses and events, Brewer said. The garage's design could include retail on the ground level. A proposal could be presented to City Council by spring 2014.
