Westlake Academy — the state's only municipal charter school, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year — plans both a groundbreaking and graduation this month.

Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker will be the speaker at this year's commencement, which begins at 2 p.m. June 1 at theHurst Conference Center, 1601 Campus Drive in Hurst.

The municipal charter school, which generates a massive waiting list each year, breaks ground on an expansion at 12:30 p.m. June 6. The work will include a three-story secondary classroom building, a multipurpose building and an athletic field house. A communitywide celebration on the campus and town green will continue until 3:30 p.m. with food trucks, live music and inflatables.

A timeline of the school's history, put together by city and school staff and students will be installed later this summer.
